Osteoporosis

Can anyone help me regarding post menopausal osteoporosis??
My mother has been through her menopause phase one year ago. Last week, she has been to the doctor for her check-up, it was seen that she has bone deficiency. Normally it is said if you have already been through the menopausal, you have greater risk to get post menopausal osteoporosis. A friend of hers has told her to take boniva  to treat that bone deficiency but she is a bit reluctant to take medication without prescription. What are your views on that medication?? Can she take it without prescription?? Does this medication need prescription??
